Your best bet is the Blue Book. Not only will it give you that info on Winchester, it covers most firearms.

Look at the post called STICKY at the top of this forum THERE ARE errors in the serial dates For Winchester in the BLUE BOOK [:(!][xx(][V] However that is what BATFE uses to determine if the gun was made before 1899. this determines if you need FFL or not.

There currently is no "best" single book that will give you the information you are seeking. The advice you were given recommending the Blue Book is an extremely poor choice in my erudite opinion. The WINCHESTER Dates of Manufacture 1849 - 2000 book written by George Madis is the basis for most interenet websites that contain the DOM information, and was also used by the Blue Book... none of which are accurate[xx(].

The only truly accurate source of Winchester dates of manufacture information is the Cody Firearms Musuem (in the Research department and the McCracken research library). They have both the original (surviving) factory ledgers, and the serialization (Polishing room) records. If you are a member, you can have serial numbers researched free of charge, and can get factory letters at a greatly reduced price. (use the internet link that follows my name in my signature line).
