Arsenal Inc, Krebs Customs, or Lancaster Arms make really good AK variants.

For used guns, Chinese Mak90, the Romanian SAR series, and any KBI yugo or Hungarian AK's are pretty good.

Most all will work except the anonymous rebuilds by some smiths and anything marked Hesse or Vulcan.

Guardian... Stay way far away from Romanian Ak's. They have too many troubles to list.
As for the Chinese MAK90... GREAT choice. I, like you, never had an AK-style rifle and came here for same advice. I finally found a MAK90 and it is worry-free. Feeds all sorts of bullet configurations, has a much nicer trigger than most and it has the MOST NECESSARY chrome bolt and chrome-lined bore. I bought some Bulgarian-made 30 round mags and the combo is SWEET.
    Good Luck!

Actually the issues with Romy AK's are short and easily fixable should you get one. The canted sights are the big one, and trigger slap and sloppy mag fitment are the others.

there is no ak made that doesnt perform well. you dont need to spend to much money on a milled receiver model. nothing better than a stamped chinese! romainians also work great. but if you want one , better get it now or obama wont let you! i would ask around and get a used one. the new ones are going for about 500 to 750 bucks because of obama. good luck.
