What have I got here?
I have two firearms that I want to identify and I knew that you guys could figure them out.
The first is a parts gun given to me. It is a pump shotgun and from it's lines I am fairly certain it is a Winchester. The foregrip is kind of a corncob style but since it is missing a barrel and the guts I can't ID it. The serial number is L1335XXX.
The second is a small Smith revolver in .32 S&W Long. It is a 6 shot very small frame. I have been told it is either a 30 or a 31 but I would like to find out for sure and get an approx mfg date. The serial number is 642XXX.
Any info that anyone can provide, especially on the pump gun as I need to get a bbl, a triger group, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

Cooch,
You should realize by now that sharp, properly lighted photographs are necessary to help us help you to identify firearms. Please read the 'sticky' at the top of this forums for some guidance to posting pictures.
Best.
Part Deux:
Cooch,
Any of us can have a bad day but to condemn the entire forum is a little overboard, I think.
Apparently, those capable of sifting through books and data, have been able to narrow the field down for you so we haven't done too bad, all-in-all.

Nononsense, my camera is shot and therefore no pics. And I do realize their value. It was my hope that someone had an idea based on the ser numbers. Sorry, maybe this is a wild goose chase withot the pics.
barzillia, this is definately not a 97. I have one, a take down. Not exposed hammer or open receiver for the bolt. I am thinking 12, 120, 1200....I don't know But the first number is for sure an L. Maybe it isn't a Winchester...but it sure looks like it. Again...sorry no pic.
But thank you both for responding.0 -
Have you considered that the shotgun might be an old Savage Springfield Stevens Model 67? They are very similar to the Winchester 1200 series and many came with corncob forearms! 0 -
I love it you don't have pictures and don't even say who made it because that is the question. BUT you X out the serial I think I will turn in a stolen gun report I will tell police I had 999 shotgun of each make and model ever made. and then give them you name and say you stole them I will get one RIGHT.
editSIR I was not trying to demean your post put merely calling your attention to the fact in a "sarcastic way" "that is why the color is green". That with the limited information without pictures you were limiting what we had to work with. We would all like to try to help you with your question. You chose to limit even further buy not using the serial. Sorry about offending you and I promise to let others answer your questions in the future . I think you will have better luck if you include pictures if possible.0 -
Sorry if I have offended on the forum. I used to post here and it was a friendly place.
When I posted here before I remember several posters who were told not to post entire serial numbers...that is also the way I see it in gun magazines. I thought that was normal procedure. Perhaps that has changed. I don't think anyone will turn in a stolen gun report as I don't believe I own a stolen gun. sheesh..calm down
Furthermore I seem to remember that I have seen Perry Shooter give good advice in the past...not flame someone who is just trying to get some info. I thought that this was "Ask the Experts" not "Slam those who don't know it all"
I guess I had better look for a more friendly place in the future.
And Huntsman53...you could be right. I didn't think of that and will research it further. Thank you for the idea. (I also have a Colt Huntsman...it is a straight shooter as well!!!)
Add on. After searching for pics of the Stevens I realized that my frame has a distinctive "V" fit between the stock and the receiver which the Stevens, 1200, 120, 12 didn't have. I found a pic of a Winchester 1300 and everything matches down to the "L" as the beginning of the serial number. So thanks for the responses..but I have ID'd that one.0 -
Cooch....... I wont demean you, I'll just try to help with the Smith revolver.
By the serial number it looks like a .32 Regulation Police (Post war) Pre Model 31. Smith did not start using model numbers until 1957. Your gun was likely made in 1956. These were offered with 3 1/4", 4 1/4" or 6" barrels. Barrels are measured from the front of the cylinder where it meets the barrel, to the muzzle. Finishes were either Blue or Nickel.
Your revolver should NOT have the upper right sideplate screw just below the rear sight as these were discontinued at ser# 640980.0 -
Cooch, It is not an 1897 Winchester, serial # is too high, and indeed if it is an "L" prefix that too would not match.
If you can post a few pics maybe we could be of more help.0 -
Well, we have winners all around.
As I said..the shotgun seems to be a Winchester 1300 Ranger by pics and even the ser# and pin placement for the trigger group as well as the same style cob for the foregrip.
Heck I WISH it was another 97...I have the receiver, corncob, and mag tube for one that I am trying to put together as well as a functional one...you can never have too many 97's!!
And the pistol matches Laredo Lefty's ID to a "T". 3 1/4" bbl, blued, no screw anywhere near rear sight (if you can call that channel a sight which they do LOL)
And as I said...I know pics are important but I have no camera right now (due to one of my wonderfull grandchildren) but thought I would try. As a matter of fact, I have a set of Damascus SXS bbls that I will try to ID in the future but all they have are proofs and I need to
A. clean them without damaging the bbls, and
B. get good pics of all the markings to give the experts something to work with.
Thanks to all who helped and Perry Shooter, I did not know what Green meant, I only knew that I had already answered the pic question and it seemed that you were saying that I was dealing with stolen guns. Sorry, but that got to me as I have had over 20 stolen from me and I am not a thief. Sorry if I over reacted.
Anyway..thanks to the board for all of the help. You are indeed the experts.0 -

Cooch,
We are glad to help as best we can! If you have not went back to re-read his posting, Perry Shooter edited his response to apologize for being sarcastic. He was just poking fun (sarcasm which was in green colored text) probably out of frustration. Too often, folks post a Thread for help in identifying a gun with very little if any information, no pics and very little to go on in respect to identifying the gun. I hope that there was no harm, no foul! Anyways, with a little help and direction, you were able to accomplish what you wanted and that was to identify the shotgun and the revolver! Don't hesitate to post again when you need help! We will do our best to help out and keep it out of the green![;)]0
