    cmuscha1,

Hello, and welcome to the forums here on Gunbroker.com.

Yes, You can use 6mm Remington cartridges in a 244 Remington marked rifle. It is the same chambering. If you have an earlier 244, it might not like the 100 grain loads, as the twist rate in the barrel is to slow.

"Rifle" magazine had a pretty good article on the 244. IIRC Remington 722 rifles marked "244 Remington" have the slower twist, Remington rifles marked 6mm Remington have the faster twist. You can shoot 6mm Remington in the 244 rifle, but having the slower twist I would keep bullet weights to 90 grains or less.

Sorry to see the 6mm Remington going away. The 700 VLS is the last rifle chambered for it, I have one and it's pleasant and accurate.

    cmuscha1,
The .244 Remington was designed to shoot bullets of 90 grains or less. The Remington barrel for that cartridge had a 1:12 twist and reportedly, 100 grain and heavier .244 bullets were not adequately stabilized. Remington considered the .244 as a varmint cartridge for which a 100 grain bullet was not necessary.
On the other hand, Winchester considered the .243 to be an all purpose light game cartridge for which a 100 grain bullet would be better than a 90 grain, so they used a faster rifling twist (1:10) to stabilize the heavier bullet and would also stabilize the lighter bullet pretty well for effective use on varmints.
To answer your specific question, there is no difference between the .244 Rem case and the 6mm Remington case.
If you want to experiment, get yourself some .244 ammo and then some 6mm ammo and compare the results on targets shot at 2 or 300 yds. I've always wanted to do that.

    Good luck,

There were some late production .244s with a 10" twist to handle 100 grain spitzers. The change to 6mm Rem. brought a 9" twist to be sure.

I think a 95 grain Nosler ought to do anything you need a .244 for.

Hello cmuscha1---I guess I'll be the contrarian here. According to Mike Harris at Nosler customer service, the .244---1-12 twist, is what caused them to design the 100 gr. partition. They say it WILL stabilize in the 1-12 twist Bbl. Let us know. HAWKSHAW
