Norinco 56S-1

I have a Norinco 56S-1 underfolder.
It's stamped: triangle 66, 156S-1, semi-auto, 7.62mmx39, Made in China, Sile NY.
It has a threaded, removeable slant muzzle break & bayonet lug ground off.
Anybody know the reason they added the 1, and ground off the bayonet lug.
is this considered a true pre-ban 56S-1?

    Chances are, if the bayo lug is ground off; it may have been done about the same time they approved thumbhole stocks and all that other silly crap. Wasn't Hesse out of Sile, NY?

    The -1 indicates that it is an underfolder a 56S has a fixed wooden stock. I believe there are some other more rare models also with different -numbers . Don't have a clue why the lug was cut.

    I believe that was Sile distributors that was out of Sile, NY. Vulcan Arms, formerly Hesse, says they are from St.Paul Minnesota. Not sure as to why the lug is ground off, but it could be that the ban was forseen by some of theimporters, like the SLR-95 was available before the 1994 ban took effect, If I am not mistaken. It had a permanantly attatched compensator, no bayo lug, and a thumbhole stock.

    I had one of the 56 S variations, with the red plastic furniture. Bought it new in approximately 1986? This was years before the ban. It came with all the evil features including bayonet lug. As they were all sold with the lug, I believe somebody for some reason removed yours after it was sold.

    Sile was a big outfit at the time, located in New York City. Although other importers also brought in Chinese AK's. I don't recall who was the importer of my AK, but it wasn't Sile.

    thanks for the comments, was wondering if i would get any, but patience pays off.
    i think that the ban was forseen as well and it was cut, or cut off later for some reason, though exactly sure why.
    so is this gun what they call a pre-ban?
    i saw a post on ak47.net or something where "Some" Siles 56s had a 7 stamped next to it, and the 56s-1 had a 1 preceding.

    Since the barrel is threaded it likely is a preban. Only way to know for sure is track the serial number with whoever has those kind of records. I don't know who that would be.

    As the lug has been removed it will not be worth as much as an unaltered preban rifle of the same model and condition.
