winchester 97 looong barrel???
Does anyone know of a 40 or more inch barrel on model 97 winchester? The gun is in good+ condition and appears to be original with serial # dating of around 1936.I only got a quick look..It was offered to me,but I know nothing about these 97's..It is 12 Ga with great stocks and good finish..I need to act fast,as the owner was going to take it to pawn and gun shops locally today..Thanks for any info

The Winchester 97 in Good condition I would pay $ 400 to $ 1000.00 depending on amount of finish on the gun. That long of a barrel if markings are right could be a premium of 70 to 100% of a price of a regular 97 in the same condition.
If you really want it. Buy it for the joy of owning a rare gun.0 -
Well go get it and post some photos, we'll tell you if you got burnt..[8D] 0 -
perfect for turkey shoots..ya might win a ham[^] 0 -
Winchester did not make Model 1897(97) barrels longer than 32-inches. 0 -
99.9% chance this was a modified barrel that was stretched To turn it into a so called TURKEY shoot gun They took original barrel and installed a sleeve. in part of the original barrel smaller then a normal 12Ga. bore and then the part of the sleeve NOT down the original was only turned down on the OD to the same diameter of the original barrel Some times these are silver sodered in place. Lok at the barrel very closely between the 26Th and 32nd inch from the receiver I think you will find a joint. [V][:(][:(]
EDITTurkey shoot guns are BIG business in some parts of the country . Machine shop guys make a living out of just building barrels I though you shot gun had a winchester barrel Thus I said most likely sleeved but with No markings the most likely barrel built fro scratch . or at most just a very short original stub of a barrel. I know of a guy in northern Va. that s stopped all other kind of machine work. just makes turkey shoot guns .0 -
OK ..Update::: The barrel is 48"..absolutely unreal..I have inspected the barrel very closely and can not see any evidence of sleeving or other means of modifying..also, I can see NO Winchester marking on barrel.. The receiver and [barrel extension??] have same serial number..This is a takedown model..Serial # dates to 1937..Metal finish is NOT as good as I originally thought< but NO pitting or rust..This is the UGLIEST shotgun I have ever seen [with such a long barrel][?][?] 0 -
Maybe it was built to be a punt gun or a goose/duck gun. 0 -
A 40 inch barrel? That is unreal. Man. I have never seen a '97 with a barrel like that. What are the markings on the barrel? I suspect that it is an after-market replacement barrel, and not a Winchester barrel. It would be helpful if you could send photos of the gun, and detailed photos of the markings on the barrel. 0 -
