1948 H&R Targeteer Jr Restoration
Well, I bought a H&R Targeteer Jr 22 lr from a friend for $50. The stock had a little crack, that I filled with wood glue, and clamped over night, worked great. The rifle had already been modified enough, to where it wouldnt be worth much, so I didnt care about value of rifle after I was finished...
I bought the rifle about a year ago, after I bought it, I did some work. I, like I said, fixed the crack in the stock, sanded down the stock, refinished it, and took some steel wool to the barel, and other metal component.
Well I was okay with the results for the time being... But after thinkin about it, I really want to make this rifle really nice, And use it as a squirrel sniper. lol.
I am wanting to go back to square one with this rifle. I am thinking about sanding the stock back down, and staining with "gun stock stain color", and putting a couple coats of "true oil" on it. The barrel has rusted again since I first took the rust off. Idk why, I dont know if I remembered to oil it down when I first took steel wool to it. So that may be the reason. I was wondering if there is some kind of coat to put over the barrel to keep this from happening again... Can I just use some kind of "clear coat" or what? **Also I am wanting to blue the barrel with a cold blue, and polish up the bolt, etc. How should I polish up the bolt, etc? I dont have a buffer... I know the list is running long, but I am wanting to put a scope on the gun, but it does not have holes drilled and tapped for a scope mount. About how much would this cost to have done by a gun smith?
Last but not least, the gun is missing its original magazine... I cant really find much on the internet about them... I was wondering If yall could help me out. How much are they?
Thanks alot!!

I use Krokus cloth for alot of metal polishing. You buy it in auto body section of the auto parts store.
BTW: I did pretty much the same thing w/a H&R Model 365 Reg-Lar. Almost same story. Bought it for a project for $35. in bad condition at a gunshow. Cracked stock/missing parts.
Sanded/glued/refinished the stock using Tru-Oil. Was amazed that parts were easy to find. In the end, the rifle looks great. But the REAL pay off was shooting it. It's a TACK DRIVER!0
