Follow up question for Burt H on Win 94
You are correct the inscription on the barrel on the 25-35 does say Nickle Steel Barrel.
To my question on when the ramped front sight was first used you responded. "The answer is June 1932, in the 1082900 to 1085000 serial range. It was at the exact same time that Winchester changed to the ramp style front sight (with sight hood) for all calibers."
I recently acquired a 32special serial number 944288 that has the ramped front sight. This rifle looks to be in unfired condition and 100percent factory, but with some minor rusting on the receiver from poor storage. Single proof mark on the barrel so if it was rebuilt it was done at the factory. Did Winchester assemble model 94 receivers out of numbered sequence? What would your thoughts be - a late assembled and shipped gun or one that was sent back to the factory for rebuild?

Without the benefit of examining the gun, I can not say for sure what has transpired.
That said, my bet is that it was rebarreled after the fact using an original barrel off of a later gun. If you remove the magazine tube and forened stock, you should find a 2-digit year number stamped on the bottom of the barrel near the frame ring.
Serial number 944288 was serialized in July of 1922... almost ten full years before Proof Steel and ramp front sights were used.0 -
Thanks Bert. Thats what I was thinking. I'll have to check the barrel date. 0
