    Without the benefit of examining the gun, I can not say for sure what has transpired.

    That said, my bet is that it was rebarreled after the fact using an original barrel off of a later gun. If you remove the magazine tube and forened stock, you should find a 2-digit year number stamped on the bottom of the barrel near the frame ring.

    Serial number 944288 was serialized in July of 1922... almost ten full years before Proof Steel and ramp front sights were used.
