Here is a scope mount and bolt handle combo that I have considered.

Burris and Leupold both make good pistol and EER scopes that are relatively affordable. I never drill anything I own...especially the milsurps; sacriledge! I have a model 44 Polish that is scout mounted with a Tasco zoom 1.75 to 4.25 pistol scope that has done yeoman work for 8 or so years and is around 1.5 MOA or better than that with hand loads. It's the only B-Square base I ever used that worked....and I've owned a few!

Is Long Eye Relief just as good as drilling for side mount and what kind of LER scope is good

Answering the second question first, take a look at Burris, Leupold and Nikon for long eye relief scopes.

Is LER just as good as standard mount?

Depends what you are trying to do. With a red dot type (1x) scope, it barely matters where you put it. So for something like that, I wouldn't bother drilling and tapping the gun.

If you want actual magnification, the further away from your eye the scope is, the less your field of view.

Consequently, going more than 4x or so on a long eye relief scope can make it really hard to find the target. If you go this route, I'd suggest a fixed power scope between 2 and 4x. 4x is actually plenty for shooting anything 100 yards or less, and adequate for a bit more.

Also, generalizing a bit, I think there is a much wider variety of scopes available (let alone better overall quality) with conventional eye relief. If you want a fancy reticle, extreme light gathering, high magnification, etc, you're probably not going to find it in a pistol/LER scope.

So if you want to do serious shooting at long distances, you probably are better off with the side mount. Don't forget that you'll have to have the bolt handle bent down to clear the scope, and also that you'll forgo the ability to use stripper clips (though that may not be such a big deal).

Here is my personal setup. Its an S&K mount with a Leupold 2x pistol scope on a stock M44 carbine, with bayonet removed. I've also added a recoil pad, and put a piece of foam under the shell holder to act as a cheekrest and elevate my line of sight a bit (ie like a fake Monte Carlo stock).

consider S&K milled mounts, a NC star 2x7 at the bottom price and Burris
    4x12x top end.

    Hi,

A Barska LER scope with a B-Square mounts on a M44. Accuracy with hand loaded ammunition with this set up is very good. Very affordable.
