winchester pre 64 model 70 300 mag
I have a Winchester model 70 pre 64 300 magnum. SN 1218xx in a 98% over all condition, some marks on the wood, with an ALL WEATHER ALASKAN scope; was given to me by an old friend of the family. He said that usage was minimal.
I have no idea what the worth of this gun would be these days.
Could anyone please give me an idea?
Thanks PA.

If it has "some marks on the wood" it's not a 98% rifle. That said, there wern't alot of those built, I don't have the exact numbers in fron of me, but it's not alot. The 300 Winchester Magnum was introduced in 1963, meaning 1 year of production befor 1964.
You need to post clear, well lit, close pictures for us to give you an honest value. Intructions for posting photos are in a sticky at the top of this page.
Welcome to the forums, I'm looking forward to seeing your pictures.

chibcha39940,
Hello, and welcome to the forums here on Gunbroker.com.
As stated there were not many Pre-64 Model 70's made in 300 Winchester Magnum, but there were several made in 300 H&H Magnum. So, we need to establish which 300 magnum it is. From the serial number you provided, I will take a gander that it was made between 1948, and 1951 sometime. It is most undoubtedly a 300 H&H Magnum.
The value depends on originality, and condition, and we need to see good, up close, well lit(natural outdoor daylight is best) photographs to determine these things. There are factors such as holse drilled and tapped possibly for the scope, that do not belong there, unless it is a Stith mounting system, and the condition of the finish of the metal and wood. will describe how to post photo's. You will need to use a photohosting website such as photobucket.com, or imageshack.com to post them. We would all love to see pictures anyway, but without them, the best we can tell you, is that it is worth between $500.00 as a shooter, to $3000.00 as a collector.

Welcome to the forum. As mentioned by the fine young men previously not many 300 Win Mags were made.. 4916 per Roger Rule and '63 only. The 121xxx s/n is 1949 manufacture and a 300 H&H Mag. 37,186 made from '36-'63 per Mr. Rule. Photos would help. Easily $750 - $1000 sight unseen.
My '52 issue has a Pachmyer side mount with a period Weaver 2.5 x 5 in it. Wish it wasn't drilled with extra holes, but it is a tack driver as is. Gave $950 about 6 yrs ago.
