You want the short version? That is a short barreled shotgun, and you cannot have it in California.

Ownership simply cannot be accomplished by a private person in CA. There are permits for SBS from the CA Department Of Justice, but these are never issued to individuals. Go with the 18 inch tube instead.

I know a shoulder stocked shotgun with a 14" bbl in CA is impossible, maybe the question is about a PG "shotgun" with a 14" bbl? I don't know if there's a difference with obtainability in CA.

Any shotgun, shoulder stocked, or pistol grip with a barrel shorter than 18 inches is an NFA regulated SBS. As Mark has stated, California does not allow any individuals to own NFA weapons.

Even riot barells for law personnel are 18". If you plan on going shorter plan on jail time if you are caught with it.

    I'm curious.

Why would anyone want a shotgun with a barrel that short, other than for use in holding up convenience stores?

That would depend on the department. There are many that LEGALLY own shorter barreled ones. If not why is there such a big LE market for them?

Why is he facing jail time (other then he is in CA) for owning a LEGAL SBS?

That has absolutely no bearing on the question, and DOES NOT belong in this forum. In many states of this country, it is perfectly legal for law abiding citizens to own NFA weapons like the above. If I could own one in the state I live, I would surely have one for protecting my homes.

It was an honest question from a fellow who probably did not understand that such items are for all intents and purposes unavailable for ownership by private persons in CA. There was never any mention of criminal intent and simply desiring to own a SBS in no way implies a desire to commit a crime.

I will remind all of you of the importance in this forum to remain focused on the original topic.
