45/70would be best. A 12ga. rifled barrel with sabots might work.

At more than 50 yards it's no contest, 45-70.

I would take the good old 45-70 anyday. Most 12 gauge slugs are around one ounce, or 437.5 grains...match that up against the old standard of 405 grains for the 45-70, in a smaller diameter bullet. It will out penetrate a lot of things, up to and almost including a freight train. Give me the 45-70!

My reinforced Marlin Guide Gun will move a 455 gr gas checked lead FN around 1900 fps. It is potent medecine on ANYTHING walking. Out to 150 yds I would trust it on ANYTHING, AS LONG AS i HAVE 300 GR hORNADYS' IN THERE AS THEY SHOOT MUCH FLATTER THAN the slugs generally do, and retain more energy longer too boot. The 130 year old 45-70 can really deliver the mail when used in strong, modern actions. I have a friend who owns a Siamese Mauser bolt gun in 45-70 and I will NOT publish load datum for it as it seems (and in most guns IS) crazy, but it will outperform a 458 Win Mag...that should be enough gun for anything!

The 405gr 45/70 is one of those classic combinations that everyone should experience in the field. A truly lethal mix of velocity, energy, penetration, and accuracy.

Not much difference anymore between them. Slug technology with sabots has imporved leaps and bounds over the years. To a point where they are performing at about the same level as a 45/70.

    See examples below.

On first principles, if were hunting moose, I'd rather have the rifle than the shotgun.

But given the specific constraints of the question (ie a shot at a relatively big target at 100 yards or less), I don't think you're going to see much PRACTICAL difference.

.45/70 should (ie "could") be more powerful, but that's going to depend on the exact load you use. 12 gauge slug should still be powerful "enough".

The rifle should be more accurate than the shotgun, though with the right slug/gun combination a shotgun certainly can give you decent enough groups at 100 yards to do what you need to do.

The differences are going to much more significant if you open up the guns to other uses.

For example, the shotgun is still a shotgun. . .if you also want to shoot birds or rabbits with it, its probably a better choice.

The rifle, obviously, will work a *LOT* better if you want to stretch things out PAST 100 yards, plus if you wanted to, you could use reduced power loads yet still retain decent accuracy.

Lets say your moose is standing 130 yards away. Now compensating for drop of the slug with the shotgun can be problematic. The shotgun slug starts out at a much lower velocity, plus it also loses velocity faster than the more aerodynamic rifle bullet. Past 100 yards, and the slug drops pretty fast.

Black powder era .45/70 isn't all that fast, compared to other rifles, but even so, bullet drop is going to much less of an issue with the rifle.
