Colt Series 70 questions
I recently acquired a Colt Government Model MK IV, series 70 .45 acp.
It was from my brother-in-law's estate. It looks like new (to my untrained eye)other than the marks on the barrel. It came with the original box and manual. The end of the box is marked Model #01970 and the S/N 70B35XXX.
I am trying to determine the following things:
1.) Can anyone tell me the date of manufacture? (the owners manual is copyrighted 1978--assuming it it the original manual!)
2.) Approximate value???--no money changed hands, but I do need to account for the value.
Here are some photos to assist...

Thanks to anyone who can offer any insight.
Cheers!
Mike

It was obviously made after 1978.
It was perhaps less obviously made before 1983 when they went to Series 80.
If you want to know the exact year, call Colt at 1-800-962-COLT and they will tell you. They will not say more without you paying $100 for a factory letter, which probably will not tell you much more than a date and the dealer that it went to.
I won't guess a value.
Are you going to sell it?
Do you need a number to show what share of the estate you are getting?0 -
I believe the pistol was made in 1980 that year could have any of the following as part of serial B70 SM or 70B Serial on first of year was 30009B70 and Dec 31 was 72990B70 . This year was mixed up to say the least but your numerical digits of serial fall in this years group. As to value the gun looks like it was cycled very fey times from marks caused by the series 70 bushing on the front of barrel . I hope it is just dried grease on the slide as that part looks discolored but not worn. With box that has matching serial number I would say $800.00 + IF that is dried grease on the surface of slide. HOWEVER If the slide is discolored then subtract $100.00 to $150.00. 0 -
my reference shows 1982 starting at 70b11xxx and 1983 starting at70b47xxx.
this is from wilson's 3rd edition book of colt firearms.
colt dd a lot of crazy things with serial numbers..........

Thank you all for the info. BTW, the "discoloration" is dried grease, I disassembled it and it cleaned up nicely.... 0 -
Keep the box and paperwork with the gun - adds some value to it. It's nice to have the "B" part of "New In Box". 0
