M1A Questions
I learned in my years on GB that at some point Springfield Armory switched from forged to cast recievers, and that the cast recievers may or may not be milspec. When did this take place? My M1A, s/n 117034, was purchased new by me in 2000 or 2001. It has a TRW bolt so does that mean the reciever is milspec since it has a qov't surplus bolt? Also, both the operating rod and trigger group have a number followed by an "SA". I thought that meant Springfield Armory, and therefore were commercial parts and not military surplus. Well today I looked at the M1 Garand that Mark C has listed and in a picture of the operating rod, the number is followed by an "SA" So are all my guts military surplus? Just what do I have? Thanks in advance for any input.

I have a standard grade SA M1A, and with some Christmas money I want to purchase National Match front and rear sights for it. Can I just buy a NM rear sight aperture and install it in my standard base or do I need to get a whole NM sight assy? I'm not really interested in the 1/2 MOA clicks the NM base might offer, I just want a smaller aperture. Thanks in advance for any good advice. 0 -
The NM rear sight can be installed in your base and it will provide 1/2 minute elevation adjustments. There are two aperature sizes. Don't get the smallest one unless you have eagle eyes. You will need a new base and windage knob to make it 1/2 inch adjustable. 0 -
Roger, thank you kindly! 0 -
You may want to check with the CMP folks and see what they have to offer as well. 0
