Daisy "Ralphie" model BB gun
Twice this year I have been to gun shows where a dealer had a model Daisy RED RYDER BB guns like the one Ralphie got in "The Christmas Story" with a compass in the stock and markings that you could tell time. They ranged in price from 185.00 to 400.00.Today in the Detroit News there was a story about the old Daisy factory in Plymouth MI. The article stated Daisy never made a model like the one Ralphie got.Is the newspaper wrong or are people trying to scam cumtomers? Dave

Where's the compass? Some have a medallion.0 -
I believe that there is some question among Daisy collectors as to whether or not the Red Ryder ever actually had a compass at the time (1940) the film was set. 0 -
it is now made in china[V] 0 -
From what little I know of them, they never had the compass. The one I bought 10 yrs ago didnt either, it was a new reproduction. 0 -
Word was, as described in the written story, gun did not exist. Story (and movie) got so much attention, and so many requests, they made one like the one described in the story.
Merry Christmas, kid. You'll shoot yer eye out.0 -

They got it wrong on the stock!. It was A Christmas Story not A Christmas Dream0 -
At the time the movie was set the gun ABSOLUTELY DID NOT EXIST. The gun that had the compass and sundial (the thing which tells time) was on the Buck Jones Special. The Red Ryder would have been a copper band model with a cast iron cocking lever. This gun was only made for one year, then WW2 halted all BB gun production and Daisy was put to work for the war effort.
Jean Sheppard refused to change the inaccuracies of his story, so Daisy made guns for the movie to fit the story. After the movie became a hit Daisy made more guns to match the ones in the movie to cash in on its fame.0 -

They did that intentionally so they wouldn't have to pay royalties to the producers of "A Christmas Story".0
