Winchester 30 06
Do ya'll know when Winchester stopped calling the 30 06 -- 30 Gov 06 and changed to the 30 06 Sprg?
Also when did they change the 270 WCF to @70 Win?
Im looking at model 70 stampings
Thank you

Rex,
Winchester changed the caliber markings on the Model 94 in the year 1950 (e.g. the "30 W.C.F. became the "30-30 WIN., and the "32 W.S." became the "32 WIN. SPL."). I suspect that at nearly the same time, the Model 70 caliber markings were changed.0 -
Rex,
As always Bert is right on. Although I don't realy think there is an exact date. I have a model 70 that was manufactured in early 1952 that has 30 Gov on the barrel. I got the gun from the original owner so I know nothing has been changed. I beleave that once the decesion was made, it took a while to use all of the prexisting barrels. I'm sure this varried according to caliber.

July 11, 1950 is the date authorization was granted for the new one piece Noble-Westbrook Roll-O-Mark model 50 die marking press.

I just purchased a Model 70 serial # 164??? ( dont remember the rest without going to look). According to Madis and Rule it was made in 1950, but Whitaker says 49. It has the 30 06 Sprg stamped. I guess it must have been made in 50 and one of the first ones stamped that way. Its way too nice for me to be messing with untouched screws to see what is stamped on it. I seem to always slip and hurt the screws.
any thoughts

Buy yourself a hollow ground screw driver set for Christmas. My bet is that gun was made stamped after July, 1950.0
