I believe there is a spring under a ball bearing that creates pressure under the ball pushing onto the bolt handle. You grasp firmly and pull handle out. Push firmly and snap handle back in.

zimmden has it right. If you look at the underside of the bolt handle you'll notice a dimple. The dimple snaps over a spring loaded ball when shoved back into the bolt.

And also, I don't see the spring laoded ball in the diagram. What is the number on it if it is on the diagram? Thanks!

Go figger, it isn't illustrated or listed in that schematic and parts list.
I'm almost certain the detent and spring are the same as the older model 1100, absolutely certain it's the same parts as the model 878.
It may be a ball, or it may be a cup shaped plunger. Call Numrich and the nice lady will transfer you over to a tech/parts picker. Order a spare charging handle while you're there, good insurance.

the 'ball & spring' hide inside the bolt carrier and are more or less permanetly 'fixed' to it. they normaly don't have to be replaced.

My old parts list from Remington shows the Operating Handle, plunger, retainer and spring are available. The plunger, retainer and spring are the same parts for the Model 58 as the 1100. The list is old since the prices are 25, 35 and 25 cents each. Contact me (zimmersden@triton.net)for parts #s if you have trouble.

I will order the parts and have a gunsmith put this together so I don't screw it up! just to be certain- the parts I need are numbers 70,71,and 75A on the 1100 schematics page? It looks like they are on page 11? Thanks guys for all of your help! Grandpa would be proud.

My list shows 70, 71 and 72 but it is old. And stop that Grandpa stuff. I bought my Remington 58 new in 1962. Good Luck. It's a fine gun. Most parts are the same as the 1100 except for the gas system.

Awesome! thanks! I ordered the plunger and the detent spring from Numrich. Not seeing the retainer for the 1100 or the 58. I will keep my eye peeled. Thanks again!
