I just picked up an M1 Garand in great condition, the receiver is marked on the left side C A T Gorgia, VT. The stock is after market, as it has no inspector stamps or other markings on it.
Can anyone give me an idea what this is? Who C A T is? Is value comarible to armoury rebuild?
    Thanks for the help.

i'm far from being an expert on Garands, but it seems the origional barrel was replaced,at some point. could have been shot out, damaged or many other reasons.

1877XXX was shipped right at the end of August or right at the beginning of September 1943. It is normal for an original barrel to be a couple of months behind the ship date (i.e. July).

Based on the date of your barrel I would suggest it is most likely a replacement. It is quite difficult to find World War II M1 Garands with the original barrels as the ammo was corrosive.

Whether or not to get another barrel is a personal preference. If I wanted a shooter, I'd probably leave as is unless the barrel is shot out. YMMV

    I hope this helps,

According to Bruce Canfield (Complete Guide to the M1 Garand and The M1 Carbine), during WW2 the rifle was generally built up to 3 months after the barrel date. Mr. Canfield says there were exceptions, but these were in the minority.

I would hate to swap barrels & mess up what might possibly be an all original rifle. OTOH, if the barrel is in poor condition, you may as well change it. Finding a correct date barrel in the same condition as your rifle, & changing it without incident AND being able to get it to headspace may be difficult.

George,Charlie and Neal, thanks for responding to my question.

I thought that I had a problem with the 44 barrel date in my 43. The barrel cleaned of nicely and is not all shot out.

Based on your opinions,I decided that I am going to leave the gun just the way it is and not change anything. No use looking for trouble.

The money saved on messing around with this one can be put to better use by putting some more with it and just buying another one.
After all,two are better than one. Right?

It seems that I have suddenly been bitten by the M1 virus.
