S&W Mod 36 Rev.
I have a S&W Mod. 36 in 38 caliber. A dealer ask me if it was a No Dash Mod. What was he talking about? Thank you for helping me find out. I hope this is not a dumb question. Thank you again.

Not dumb...Not even close!
A dash number on S&W products represents a specific engineering change (or changes) to a pistol (or series of pistols). There would be an S&W 36, 36-1, 36-2, ect. I believe that there were a total of 10 engineering changes to the Model 36, but I am not a S&W expert.0 -
When you look at the model number it is a model 36 or a dash model which would be an improved model by the factory. As they made updates for the model they would then be a 36-1 36-2 or as time go by as many updates until they quit making the model 0 -
He's talking about the various engineering changes that S & W made in the Model 36 over the years. They will be identified by a hyphenated number stamped on the frame underneath the crane, when the cylinder is opened up for loading. The basic number 36 without a hyphenated number was the first/earliest variation made by the factory, and would be more sought after by collectors. 0 -
A no-dash 36 in good shape is an excellent revolver. It represents the best of the early S&W J-frame snubbies. If your dealer had it in his hands, and cold not tell if it was a N0-dash or not, I wouldn't go back there. If it was an over the phone conversation, take it to him and show him.
