45-90 smokeless load data
I can't find any load data for the 45-90 cartridge, Barrel on my Winchester 1885 says "black powder only" I use smokeless in my 45-70 and there are 100's of 45-70 bullet and powder combinations listed.I'm not a purist when it comes to single shots and I'd much rather use modern powder. thanks

Check on the WEB for TRAIL BOSS powder load data. This powder was made for low pressure in Black Powder type Cartridges. 0 -

"Barrel on my Winchester 1885 says "black powder only""..........I'LL ASSUME THIS IS A CURRENT EDITION M-1885 MADE IN JAPAN, AS SUTCH IT WILL TAKE ANY STANDARD LOAD FOR THE .45/70 (AND PROBABLY A LOT MORE, BUT YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN THERE). 0 -
i have quite a few on hand from back issues of handloader magazines. some good ones from ken waters. if you would like i can scan them and email them. or print them out and send them. took along time as well to dig some up from reputable sources. let me know. Kevin 0 -

What weight bullet are going to use in your 45-90?
I personally like IMR 4198, as it produces nearly identical presssure and velocities as black powder when loaded properly.0 -
Bert, You asked what bullets i plan to shoot in my 45-90? I really like heavy bullets like 450 or 500gr (in my 45-70) but as you said the 45-90 rifling is designed for 300 gr. cast bullets. What charge do you like with 4198? Also do you use a filler or wad? thanks Dave 0 -

You never said if your 1885 was an original or a newer copy. I have a 1885 BPCR rifle in 45-70, and an 1886 takedown(1999 vintage), also in 45-70. I use a 405 grain cast bullet, and 34 grains of IMR 4198, with NO FILLER.

Dave,
If you shoot the 300-grain bullet, start with 38-grains of IMR 4198 and work up (or down) slowly until you find the sweet spot. With a 405-grain bullet start with 32-grains. IMR 4198 does not require any filler, as you have the case approximately 50% full.0 -
Thanks to all who responded, you were a big help and special thanks to Bert. Dave 0 -
