Winchester 1873 - value
I think what I have here is a 1873 third model rifle. You can tell by the pictures theres not any original finish left on the metal, but at least it hasn't been cleaned or reblued. It says 38-cal on the barrel and on the brass piece on the bottom of the receiver, am I correct in assuming its a 38-40? Everything works as it should and the action seems to be tight. It doesn't look to be abused, just well worn and original. The serial # is 102557A. Does anyone have a rough idea as to value and year it was made? Thank you.

Hello knifecollector,
It is an early production Third Model (late 1882), with the early style caliber marking on the barrel. The elevator block is "gunmetal" (a.k.a. bronze) verus brass.
In today's market, it is a $1800 rifle. As long as it is in sound mechanical condition and the bore is the same, you can still shoot that old timer with the factory loaded Winchester 38-40 ammo.0
