What would be the manufacture date of a '97 Winchester serial # D268672? Thanks.
The D is throwing me. Minus the D, the serial number puts it in the 1905 range.

There again, minus the prefix, 1917.

The "C", "D" and "E" serial number prefixes refer to the "series" of the Winchester Model 1897 shotgun. There were various changes, usually minor, made by Winchester to the Model 97 over the years and these S/N prefixes were made part of the S/N sequence to note these changes or variations. The actual seial numbers themselves, for the most part, stayed sequential

So, what of the "A" and "B" S/N prefixes? To the best of my knowledge, you will not see any 97's marked with the "A" or "B" prefix (or Model 93's either).

This gun actually began life as the Winchester Model 1893 shotgun and shortly after production started, enough significant modifications were made that Winchester changed the model from 1893 to 1897.

This is the short of it and generally is the information most are looking for. There are detailed explanations that are available, which will provide very accurate coverage of the history of this wonderful, John Browning designed shotgun.

    And so, there you are.
You can get very detailed information on the Win97 and other guns here on the GunBroker ATE Forum. Plus, as you see here, related to early Winchesters, there is a knowledgeable resource with human contacts and resources and both digital and print media resources, which enable him to be able to quote chapter and verse regarding these old guns. You came to the right place for information.

    Hello Krazyshot,

Winchester Model 1897 serial serial number D268672 was manufactured in December of 1904. The Cody Firearms Museum (CFM) has the original factory warehouse ledgers and Polishing Room Serialization records for the serial number on your gun, and can provide you with exact dates (for a fee).

Winchester Model 1897 serial number 610957 is a January 1914 vintage gun. The CFM has the Polishing Room Serialization records for that serial number (again for a nominal fee).

    In that, you are incorrect.

The Model 1893 was marked with both an "A" and a "B" prefix. The "A" series guns began at circa serial number 13,800 (with an intermix of the pre "A" series up to serial 14,600). The "B" series guns began at circa serial number 23,500 (though I have observed a few in the 20,000 range). Pictured below are a few examples. There were more than 34,000 Model 1893s manufactured before it was replaced by the revamped Model 1897. Today, it is tough to find an original Model 1893, but at least a few thousand of them survive today.
