Browning Sweet 16 DOM?

I've checked the Browning site but I didn't find the exact number and it still confuses me. This is a labeled Sweet Sixteen made in Belgium serial # S 978XX. No number prefix before the S. It's a family hand down and they want to know the year that Grandpa(deceased) bought the shotgun. Any help is appreciated. They brought it in to be cleaned and checked out but I'm going to suggest they put it in a good case and buy a common gun to shoot possums and skunks. This is the third mint condition 40+ years old shotgun that has come in to be cleaned of decades of dust and gummed up grease from an oldtimer's closet in the last couple of years.It seems to me people who've not thought of needing/using a gun for years suddenly decide to drag the old shotgun out just in case.
