Optics Question
Looking for a quality rifle scope that I can use on a 270 win. was looking at the Leupold VX-II Rifle Scope 3-9x 50mm LR Duplex Reticle. Now the two hash marks below the center crosshairs seem like they would be useful, but I can't see how they would be accurate for each caliber. Would you just bracket your shooting at varying distances until you found the proper yardage for each hash mark for your rifle? Is there a table available that tells you which round a scope like this might be good for? Sorry if this is the wrong forum for a question like this.[?]

MOA, how does it work? What does it mean? I have a super accurate rifle sitting in my closet without a scope. I spent most of my shooting life with iron sights, and the remainder with pretty cheap scopes. This rifle needs a scope and frankly deserves a top notch one. (Its gonna have a lousy shooter so it needs something

1988z01---I'm not to sure of your terminology, but I'll assume that one dial is graduated in MOA, which is about 1" at 100 yds. On the other hand, you can have a dial custom built for your particular rifle/load. This considers your muzzle velocity, bullet BC, temp., elevation, etc for that particular load. This dial is calibrated in actual yards to target. Leupold, Huskemaw, and probably others offer the latter dial Hope this helps. HAWKSHAW 0 -
Target Turrets are made to easily change the settings of your scope. Most of Leupolds target turrets are set at 1/4 MOA adjustment, meaning that with each "click" they will move the point of impact 1/4 inch at 100 yards. So if you had a rifle that was zeroed at 100 yards and you wanted to move to 300 yards you would turn your turrets the appropreate number of "clicks" to accomplish that goal. Lets say your rifle had 3 1/2 worth of drop at 300 yards tith a 100 yard zero, to set your scopr to 300 yards you would turn your turret 14 "clicks", to get back to 100 yards zero you would then turn your turrets back down 14 clicks.
The BDC dials, as you have called them, are set to a particular load through your rifle. So to move your 100 yard zero to 300 yards you would simply move the turret to the 300 yard marker.
for some people the BDC is a great and simple idea. I personally do not like them, I'm a tinkerer and I love experamenting with different loads. Due to this the BDC would be a use less expence. But for you it might be just the ticket.0 -

OK, I think I get the "BDC". The 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, etc is for yardage for a particular bullet, temperature, etc.

That would be true for 3 1/2 MOA, but not 3 1/2 inches. You need to specify. The majority of shooters have a hard time rationalizing between MOA, inches, and Mil's. Inches drop are absolute, where MOA, and Mil's are a proportionate relationship.
To answer the original poster's question, the target turret's sometime come in 1/8MOA adjustment, making for a more precise zero or point of impact adjustment. The bullet drop turret, compensates for your rifle/load/sight combination, with the help of a good rangefinder. There are several companies that you can send your pertinant data too, such as sight height(centerline of bore to centerline of scope), average muzzle velocity, temperature, ballistic coefficient, bullet weight, elevation, etc., and they can make a turret to match the theoretical ballistic trajectory you will have. Take in mind, that will not compensate for downward, or upward shooting angles, unless you have a range finder that does it for you.
There are several ballistic programs out there(I have one from RCBS, and one from NightForce), that you can plug the data into, and it will spit out your adjustments you need for ranges up to 2000 yards(the NightForce software does this), including windage for a certain wind speed. Keep in mind, this is all theoretical, until proven on the range. It should be tested on paper, before being tested on game.

Sorry, but that too is incorrect. If the drop is only 3 1/2 inches at 300 yards, you only need to go 4 to 4 1/2 clicks. Those are not 1/4 inch clicks, they are 1/4 MOA. Where as 1 MOA at 100 yards is approximately 1 inch, 1 MOA at 300 yards is approximately 3 inches, 4 inches at 400 yards....7 inches at 700 yards, ...etc. 14 clicks from a 1/4 MOA turret at 300 yards will move the point of impact 10.5 inches.

Yes, that would be the correct adjustment. The correct terminology is not "1/4 inch scope". The correct terminology would be 1/4 MOA adjustment. You have the right idea. Something to remember, is that when making the adjustments to your riflescope for correction, like the glass in the scope itself, the higher the dollar scope, the higher quality of adjustment, as a general rule.

Ok, just to make sure my understanding is correct.....
If using Target Turrets/Dials using the 1/4 inch scope, this means that each click equals 1/4 inch of movement at 100 yards. This then changes for further yardage, such as:
* 200 yards will be ? inch movement per click
* 300 yards will be 3/4 in. per click
* 400 yards = 1 in. per click
* 500 yards = 1 1/4 in. per click
* 600 yards = 1 ? in. per click
* 700 yards = 1 3/4 in. per click
* 800 yards = 2 in. per click
* 900 yards = 2 1/4 in. per click
* 1000 yards = 2 ? in. per click
If using BDC dials, all specific information including is provided to allow that the dials have clicks that coincide to X-hundred yards, so that:
* 2 is 200 yards
* 2.5 is 250 yards
* 3 is 300 yards
