What length plug for Win 1897 ?
What lenght plug should I make for my Winchester 1897 so it will hold only 2 2 3/4 inch shells in the tube?

Measure the length of 2 1/2 shells. Then you can measure on the outside of the tube to determine how long to make your plug. 0 -

That won't work.
FILL the tube with as many shells as possible. Then unload them and lay them end to end.
Make your plug as long as any amount of shells that are more than 2. Bob0 -
Thanks guys. Seems as if that was a dumb question once I seen the answer.[:I] 0 -
Original Winchester plugs for the Model 12 and 97, the early paper wrapped as well as early stamped red letter plugs, vary slightly in diameter and length. They range from .57 inches wide by 10 3/8 inches long to .59 inches wide by 10 7/16 inches long.

I found that 1/2 inch plastic hot water pipe or tubing (NOT the standard 1/2 inch PVC pipe, which has a larger outside diameter or OD), makes good shotgun magazine plugs. This tubing/pipe is available from most hardware stores or home centers...just ask for it. Do not cover the open ends of this pipe/tubing.
This stuff makes very good magazine spacers or plugs because it is the right OD, it is easy to size and it will NOT absorb moisture and contribute to internal rusting of the shotgun magazine tube.
Whatever you do, DO NOT add weight to the magazine plug in an attempt to balance out the gun. In the Winchester Model 97, for example, since most of these guns are take-down models, if you add any significant weight to the magazine you WILL cause early and devastating wear to the buttress-style male and female threads that connect the barrel and the magazine tube to the receiver.0
