S&W 36 revolver help.
I have a S&W model 36 in 38 special w 3 inch bbl, excellent condition. On the barrel after the words S&W 38 special are the letters CTG, also when the cyllinder is open under the serial number are the letters G12...I am not sure what I have here is it is a Cheifs Special or are they all CS's? Is it a different model all together Also what does the CTG stand for. Thanks for your input

CTG stands for Cartridge. You have a 3" model 36 Chiefs Special. The G12 are assembly numbers.
I have a 3" just like it. The 3 inchers are not as common as the 2". One benefit to the 3" over 2" barrel is the extractor rod is longer for more positive extracting.0 -
Occasionally the little devil on my left shoulder tempts me to make up some exotic translation for CTG. But the angel on my right shoulder pokes me in the conscience and makes me explain that it is just an abbreviation for Cartridge. As in .38 S&W Special Cartridge.
Any model 36 is a Chief's Special. A gun of the same exact type made before model numbers were given in 1957 is a Chief's special. Yours is slightly unusual in having a three inch barrel instead of the more common two inch (actually 1 7/8".)
Your grips are replacements made by Herretts.
The true legal serial number is on the butt of the gun, now covered by the grips. The stuff under the cylinder yoke is assembly numbers and inspector's marks.0 -
Thank you GB members, an asset as usual...Any idea of it's value 0 -

From you pictures it looks to be in excellent condition. I would say around $450 to $500. Prices may vary from different parts of the country.0 -
it is in very good condition, I would say mint but I ma sure some can find something wrong to knock it down 0
