How do you....
free float a synthetic stock properly? Same as wood stock? And how far down the barrel should the space be?

Same as wood. You don't seal synthetic after grinding out material. Free float to about 2 inches from end of chamber. Barrel should "float" about 1/16". Grinding, gouging and sanding all work. 0 -
i have done two of my own and i did one for a friend so far and for what it is worth when i bedded the action i cut a piece of solid rubber, like the rubber used to make motor mounts (thats what i cut up) to fit in the cavity of the stock (if the stock is hollow) foreward of the barrel tang then glued it in with the bed rock (brand name) two part goop leaving enough room to later fill in on top of the rubber for the actual bedding of the barrel/action prior to floating the barrel. saved alot of goop that way and it worked out just cherry. a friend who also does custom bedding and floating once told me he used styrofoam for the filler in the cavity. he did not mention what he glued it in with though. i am of the impression that the fiberglass bedding goop may errode the styrofoam. 0
