Charger for Ipod,Iphone ect without AC avail.

My son just arrived in Afgan and wants us to send some kind of re-charger. Dont think I like the solar ones as they take a long time and also run the risk of getting "lost" by laying out for extended periods. What about some kind of direct dock AA battery unit? Any other ideas or experience?
