ID rifle help requested-Japanese?
Can someone help me ID this rifle I found in my brother-in-laws estate? It appears to have been "sporterized".

Who manufactured it originally? Approximately what year? What caliber? Any value "as is"??
Thanks in advance for any assistance!
Cheers
Mike

82trooper.....as you have been told, it is a Japanese Arisaka that has been sporterized. Lots of these Japanese rifles were sold in the 50's and 60's at bargain prices and were redone by gunsmiths as they were strong actions and made great hunting rifles when ammo was available cheap. This one looks like it has been restocked, a new turndowned bolt has been added, new sights, the receiver looks ground so can't tell caliber...anyway, a lot of these rifles were also rebarreled at the same time they were sporterized so I would have it checked before doing anything with it. Value? If it works....$100-150 or so. Hope this helps. 0 -
Any idea the model#/type# of this Arisaka??
Just trying to figure out what we have.0 -
it is a t99 arisaka rifle, original caliber was 7.7 but you need to look at the side of the receiver to see if was rechambered to 30-06 that was the easyest to do. i stripped many of these over the years for parts, by looking at the rear band it would appear to be an early war 1939 to mid war 1943 due to fact the band has the provision for a monopod. Bolt has been redone and safety looks polished. It is only good for a shooter now, no good parts remain for restoration. Receiver has a civilian peep sight i see mounted on it.i buy these at shows for about $50 to $75 depending on condition. 0 -

82trooper....you have either a Type 38 (6.5) or Type 99 (7.7). If I had to guess (which is dangerous) it is probably a Type 99 as it has been my experience that more of them were sporterized as the cartridge was more powerful and many were converted to the more popular American 30-06 by gunsmiths. But, again, you should have it checked by a competent gunsmith as to caliber, headspace etc before trying to shoot it IMHO.0 -
If the Arsenal/Series marks, on either side of the serial number, on the left side of reciver, have not been buffed off. And if you can post clear pics of them. I can tell you EXACTLY what it is. 0 -
OK, here are the markings on the left side of the reciever.....

Nagoya Arsenal, Series #4. Early war production. Probably 1941. Should have a chromed bore.0 -
From experience, if it is a 7.7 Jap, it's a fine deer and caribou rifle. Plenty power. 0
