I have aquired two 1911s that I don't know much about. one is appox 7.5 inches from back of reciever to end of barrel. on the slide is stamped, NM7791435. the barrel is stamped is stamped NM7791414. the reciever is stamped above the trigger ESSEX ARMS CORP. ISLAND POND, VT. The other pistol is 6.75 inches back of slide to end of barrel, no markings on the slide, SMITH & WESSON USA MTU stamped on the barrel, and ESSEX ARMS CORP. ISLAND POND VT stamped on the same place on the receiver. what do I have?

looking for 1911s in 600 and under range of these 3 what would you choose, para ordnace ssp, dan wesson or springfield. looking for best gun for plinking and being dependable. thanks 0 -
You have a mismatched National Match slide barrel combo on top of a commercial Essex arms frame. Essex made lots of frames and people made competition guns from them in kit form. The Smith slide is out of my area of knowledge, but the length tells me it is commander size slide on another Essex frame. Pictures would help determine more for you. 0 -
Hello 1KYDSTER Is correct The first pistol has MILITARY match grade parts installed on an Essex Frame The two Numbers are the Contract drawing numbers and were the last contract for the military the Barrel on the other pistol this is a Barrel made by S&W under contract to the AMU "ARMY MARKSMANSHIP UNIT" and installed in an aftermarket slide and frame. It all depends on you built the guns from these parts as to what you have . Just like a JOHN FORCE race car you or I could buy the same parts and our finished product would most likely not beat john force on the drag strip. However many of the military armorer both at Quantico Va."MARINE" and Fort Benning "ARMY" would come up with extra Parts and build guns as a side-line for friends I have a number of these parts myself. sold when they closed up some shops I have used both these type parts and Others like Kart and Barsto barrels as well as Caspian slides and frames to build match Pistols . You may have a VERY GOOD accurate pair of pistols or POS put together by BUBBA & CLETUS in their barn. Close up detailed pictures may let us tell you slightly more if possible pictures of both barrels on the Bottom locking lugs I can tell a lot on the way they are machined to fit the slide stop pin.EDIT. Feel free to send me the pictures if you can not get them to post here Juss double click on my user name and send me a Personal Email . Or I can send you pictures of what to look for. 0 -
agree with above posts. the essex frames are controversial as far as quality goes. some folks think they a crap (and some of the early production were), but they're still available now (brownells et al) and much less $$ than an sit or caspian. i have a colt slide, fusion barrel and various internals on a essex frame that is a a competitive shooter.
problem with these parts guns is they attract very little interest when offered for sale. you're almost better off selling the parts individually.
