Hollow based bullet?
I am shooting a round nosed hollow based bullet in my 45-70 Gov. Will the hollow base flare out to seal the bbl? or is it just to help stabilise the bullet?
Thanks for any help.

Seal the bullet to the bore of the rifle. This was the purpose of the hollow base on the civil war muzzle loaders and carried over to the 45/70 Even today we use them in Bulls-eye shooting in the 38 special and 32 S&W long target cartridges. 0 -
From my personal experience it depends on the hardness of the lead bullet and the type of powder used. If a hollow based bullet will expand enough to fill the rifling.
Years ago I was very surprised to find that dead soft hollow based bullets cast of pure lead with just a minimum amount of tin over a full case of 3 F Black powder, were more accurate then other harder groove diameter bullets loaded over smokeless powder.0 -
I too have been disappointed with performance of some hollow based bullets in a Sharps Carbine and some 45 cal pistols and found black powder will bump undersize, soft bullets up to size and shoot accurately.
However, hollow base bullets shoot surprisingly well in the 41 Colt Thunderer that bumps bullets up about .015".
To answer your question: If soft lead bullets bump up to size, certainly HB bullets will size to fit.
The question is whether they'll be more accurate than 450 and 500 grain
original style bullets and whether they'll be worth the added hassle of
slower casting.0
