The .22 Remington Automatic, cartridge dates to early 20th Century. It was made specifically for the Remington Model 16 semi-auto .22 rifle. These early .22 semi-auto rifles would foul very badly if they were shot with the common Black Powder and semi-smokeless .22 rimfire ammo that was then in common use.

The Remington auto .22 ammo was only made for a very short period of time.

Remington doesn't make this ammo anymore, and neither does anyone else.

Frankly, if you somehow managed to find some, you probably shouldn't shoot it. It has more collectors value than "shooting" value.

Remington does, of course, still make "ordinary" .22LR ammo, as well as .22 magnum, etc.

If your Model 16 is in descent, factory original condition, it would have value to a Remington rifle collector.

Consider putting it on the auction or take it to one of the larger gunshows. Older limited production Remingtons have a substantial collector following.

You could use the money you got for it, buying a 10-22 or something similar. Ammo wouldn't be any kind of a problem then.

...Sometimes, these guys have .22 Rem. Auto in stock. It doesn't look like they have any now, but it's worth checking back once in a while for obscure ammo.

Call Midway and ask them if they know of anyone who is planning to make a run of the stuff. Every so often someone does.
