Look at Hodgdon and IMR's sites (both owned by 1 company now). Look at Trail Boss and SR 4759. Both good for reduced loads. 4198 isn't bad either.
What you want is a smaller charge of faster powder than normally used in the cartridge.0 -
If you want reduced recoil and great fun at a big cost savings try some cast bullets. You can shoot all day long and not spend 10 bucks. 0 -
Lyman has great info on reduced loads with cast bullets 0 -
google Hodgdon Youth loads. 0 -

reduced recoil loads
Reduced loads (loads at 30/30 velocities) 2200-2400fps are listed in a caliber specific 30/06 manual and you can also review this link and if you still have questions you can call or e-mail accurate arms about using their 5744 powder!
http://www.accuratepowder.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/accurate_load_data_3.4.pdf
I use Accurate Arms 5744 powder in several guns for jacketed bullets and reduced loads and it's a good user friendly powder for such! Just keep a HEADS UP and don't double charge a case!
You will find that sometimes you can start with the minimum recommended charge of 5744 and start increasing the charge and come up with a charge that will make the reduced load groups be close enough to same point at 80-100 yards as a high velocity load and the scope settings don't have too be changed!
Most 30/06's seem to like the 5744 and I also use it in several magnum calibers with good results such as the Remington and Weatherby calibers as a reduced load for youths and recoil sensitive people and for target practice. I also use 5744@ about 12g in some 223's at 22 magnum velocities for small game hunting! (the noise level is about same level as a 22 mag also and velocity of approx 1700 fps with a 35-55 gr bullet! I use small pistol primers for best accuracy in the 223 calibers! Hulls can be reloaded without being concerned about reloading too many times also, mainly due to no stretching of the cases! (the reduced load is listed in the 223 caliber specific load manual)0 -
A little off topic regarding these light loads for 30-06...
I just came across these lighter loads in the Lyman book and was wondering how the light load with a 110 grain cast bullet would work for hunting crows and/or turkey? Of course, for turkey, I'd be looking for a head/neck shot and for the crows, just looking to rid some farmland of the pests...TIA!0 -
I would use a jacketed bullet.
Just my opinion!0 -
Plain base cast bullets are fine up to about 1200 fps, after which they usually begin to lead the bore badly even if you have everything else right. As long as speed is limited anyway, I like a heavier bullet. I use a 150 or 170 cast bullet designed for the 30-30 without a gas check for those speeds, and with a gas check for heavier but still pleasant loads to about 2000 fps from a 30-30 and 308. I don't load for the 30-06, but book loads are plentiful. Unique works well for the low-end loads, 2400 for loads from 1600 to about 1900 and 5744, 748, RL-7, 3031 and more for 2000+ fps loads. 0 -
I have shot squirrels with my 308 many times with reduced loads. Gives you practice with your hunting gun and is fun. Reduced loads can be found in many reloading manuals at the end of the regular loads with the same bullet. As stated lyman and Lee have them. 0 -
Have you ever tried trail boss powder.?? I have used it in a few of my heavy hitters. It makes a 458 win mag feel like a 243.! are you just wanting a round that you can take and plink with or a low recoil hunting round.?? 0 -

Why is that? Personal preference, I assume?0
