Not a bad invesment until they are altered. Vollkmann is a good name, but still it is an altered Kimber and is worth only what the Bobtailing has "added" to the shootability. Bobtailing normally results in better concealability and snag free draw, so I would not assume it to be a competition type alteration that adds value for a competetive shooter and this is where the real money in 1911's seems to lie. My 2 cents...

    hi...
    need help.
    wanted to get some opinions.
saw a kimber eclipse(used) w/a bobtail done by Volkmann Inc.
how are Kimbers in the reliability dept?
    are they a risky purchase?
i would like to have it as a carry gun.
    thanks!!!

If bobtail is the important thing, CZ/Dan Wesson makes a few excellent models. I have the DW CBOB and it is all steel, well made, reliable and tightly assembled.

    Hi onioni,

Welcome to the forums here on Gunbroker.com.

I am not sure if that Kimber is an alloy frame or not, but if it is, I would stay away from it period. There have been a number of problems with the alloy frame, and I am not convinced that they have got it cured yet.

Contrary to previous ramblings, Kimber's have never been a good investment. They are like a car, once drove off the lot, their value sinks like an anchor. There is only a few 1911's that are investment worthy, and some of those are military issued, and all original, and the other's say Colt on them. Even the high end customs from Wilson, Les Bare, and Ed Brown all have dramatic loss of value, once new ownership is taken.

Now, for carry, as stated there is the DanWesson, by CZ, Wilson, Ed Brown, Night Hawk, and Fusion all make bobtailed models.

Kimbers are good, reliable and accurate. Around here, Eastern PA, they sell as soon as they hit the counter. They usually fall in the mid price range. I've had the opportunity to shoot a couple and handle a lot more - seem to me to plenty accurate and solidly built. The custom job, if done by a reliable smithy shouldn't hurt the utility. 4" bobtail piece should make a good CCW. Make sure it is reliable - ask the dealer if he knows if there is anything wrong with it and if he will warrant the piece for a reasonable time (a week or two and some range time on your part should be reasonable. I just searched Volkman, Inc. - he does make some pretty pieces and has a nice web page: http://www.volkmanncustom.com take a look.
