cleaning
can you clean a barrel too much and hurt it or take out the rifling? How tight should the bush fit when cleaning
Thanks

should i clean a new ruger 380 lcp before i go to the range? 0 -
Yes, but mainly due to poor cleaning technique. Use a bore guide and a jag.
The brush should offer some resistance but not enough to make you bend the rod for instance.
More wear is done to guns via overcleaning or improper cleaning than by shooting.
I clean when accuracy starts to fall off or if I've shot black powder or corrosive ammo, or on a semi auto if the action starts to gunk up. Otherwise I just spray a little oil down the bore and blast it out with carb cleaner before shooting (if you call that cleaning...)
Edit for Emmett- yes, that's why I use Dewey coated rods. But most shooters do not have coated rods.
Even then there is some disagreement; some argue that the soft coating is liable to be impregnated with dirt and grit over time and act like sand paper, whereas stainless steel is clean and softer than the barrel metal, so is the better choice. I see both points of view, however I still use a breech guide when cleaning my newer nicer guns. For my milsurp beaters, I just clean.0 -
how do you tell if a bore is bad?
Ive been cleaning my Model 94 for way too much time and it keeps putting black and green on the pads. the color only comes off after it is bushed. Once you run a clean pad down twice it starts to come out clean. If I run a brush down the bore more black and not that much but a little green color as well0 -
There are many new bore cleaning solvents and everyone has their favorite, I use Prolix and it gets the brass and powder fouling out of the barrel of the weapons I own. That is what is going on with your bore you need to get a good product that will get the build up in the lanes and groves of your rifle. You should be able to push a patch through your rifle and have it come out clean.
Not to demean the prior post I just read a study on cleaning rod damage to weapons and that when using a rod made of soft material to clean a bore there was minimal damage even with rough usage of the rod. I wish I could produce the artical but it is so much water under the bridge. It cannot hurt to be careful when cleaning the barrel as stated in the prior post.

Rex- green is copper from jacketed bullets. While there are dozens of ways to clean a bore, try this: Wet a patch with cleaning solvent (I still use Hoppes) and mop the bore so it is wetted. LET IT SET for 10 minutes. Then use a NYLON bore brush. About 10-15 full strokes- do not reverse direction while brush is in barrel. Then dry patches. Give the solvent time to soak in and react with what is in the barrel. A brass brush can react to the solvent, and put green into the barrel. After dry patches come clean, couple of drops of oil on clean patch, wipe bore to leave a LIGHT coat of oil. Wipe the rod with a clean patch in between patch/brush/patch. 0 -
There are many ways to clean. The directions on the kits are generally a good baseline. Common sense is also good. Like washing your car too much is not helpful...
Many shooters prefer slight fouling since in many cases it improves accuracy. For example after sighting in for hunting season do not clean till after season for storage.0
