This powder is way too slow for this application. Not recommended.

On the contrary, a lot of guys on the cast boolit forum sing praises of this powder in this cartridge. I've not tried it myself though.

Swing over there and search for 8700 and you'll see what I mean.

Edit to sandwarrior: Yes! Thanks for the reminder, they do talk about duplexing with 3-5 gr of SR 4759 or IMR 4198, then the main charge, lightly compressed. Seem to remember them saying they get about 1700 fps.

To quote one member on the cast boolit forum: "AA 8700 and the surplus equivalents have a burn rate about like that of a wet paper bag."

OK, here is the deal. Seems like you are searching for a powder to use in your 45-70. It does not seem like you have a boat load of a certain type on hand, as you have asked about several other types also. You NEED to take this to the reloading forum. You have been offered suggestions here that you obviously have not taken into consideration. We have given you the best advice here that we can, from our experience and experimentation.

    travis3,

With a slow speed of the 8700 it isn't recommended for the 45-70. However, do keep in mind that with cast bullets you shouldn't be getting all that much speed anyways.

I have a friend who shoots black powder with a 45-70. For what ever reason, he also does a duplex load with US869 (which uses 8700 data to load for) I don't know the amounts of powder he uses, but it seems to me it was a minimal amount of fast powder topped by a casefull of US869. If you were to check around you may be able to find these duplex loads.

One thing is absolutely critical with a duplex load and that is getting it compressed. It will become dangerous if not compressed.
I personally don't load duplex loads for anything. But, I have shot my friends 45-70 with them. They work well enough for what he uses them for. If you need more information than that, you will need to seek out those blackpowder guys who do this and see what they load.
