Ruger compact is nice, but generally poor trigger. The M84 is an excellent rifle and would make a wonderful hunting rifle. Ultralight Arms would be my choice...check them out.

EDIT #1: The UL mountain rifle goes under five pounds. With optics etc it will still be far under 6...nobody makes em lighter OR better. The Remington is nice, but a hefty girl by comparison.0 -
You might also want to consider the Remington 700 Mountain Rifle which weighs in at just about six pounds. The one I have in 260 Rem shoots well and balances nicely for such a light rifle. You can spend a lot more for an ultralight rifle but the Remington is pretty hard to beat for the price. 0 -
One of the better things Remington done, in 1987 they offered what was known as the Model Seven FS. One of the worst things they done is to discontinue it in the next couple years. It had a Brown Precision fiberglass/Kevlar overlay stock, and a 18 1/2 inch barrel. It was cataloged at 5 pounds, 4 ounces. I have one that wears a Leupold VX-II 3-9x compact, and with an Uncle Mikes Ultra sling, and 5 rounds of ammo, tips in at 6LB., 2 oz. I did remove the factory open sights too. It was made in 243, 7-08, and 308. Best of luck finding one that someone wants to part with. They still have a similar one, called the Model 7 Custom KS. Set you back about $2k.

Since you only asked about these two rifles, I have two 84M's and my father has an 84 Montana. The Montana is lighter by a good bit. Each shoots well (cool down between shots is very important on any small profile barrel) for hunting rifles. Will never be bench guns but shoot good enough for us. Each of us took a Dall Sheep and PA whitetail with ours this year, first hunts for them and they are now our 'go to' rifles.
Have had several older Rugers and prefer them to the Mark II's, but that's just personal preference. Reasoning was if I am going to a three position safety, I prefer one that is mounted on the bolt.0 -
My daughter and I both have ruger compacts. Mine in 308 and hers in 243. Both are well below 1" at 100yrds for the first few shots, but cool down is a must after that due to the tiny barrel. You can't beat the carry weight, and I have made 200yrd shots on PA whitetail with mine. [:)] 0 -
Don't pass on a Remington "Titanium" I have one in 7-08 and I have to tie a brick to it to keep it from floating away..

CZ makes a mauser action carbine. Weighs around 5lb. Has set trigger. But remember to achieve this barrel is short which is loud, recoil is increased and off hand shooting is effected with sling movement. You may want to consider a high quality single shot with long barrel 0 -
Get the Ruger Ultralight, the ones I shot were very accurate. Rem Titanium if you can find one. I love my Browning Mountain Ti. There are still a few Colt Light rifles out there, mine shoots like a dream, has a full size barrel and still weighs 6 lbs.
Just some thoughts.

Oh yeah, had 4 Kimbers couldn't get any of them to shoot to my satisfaction. Really liked my Model 70 Featherweight Classic as well.0 -
i'd be curious what you intend to shoot??...the rem. model 600 comes in about 6lb...but is a handfull in the 350mag.....seuf 0 -
The Browning A-bolt 'mountain Ti' titanium meets your criteria, Ilove mine in 308 with a leupold ultralite scope on it. 0
