cast bullet choice
New to reloading and am acquiring the parts and piecses. Just received my RCBS Cowboy dies in 45 and the brochure states " Cowboy
seater plugs are designed to fit bullets cast in RCBS Cowboy Bullet molds." I'm not doing any casting, just planning on buying precast bullets. Would like 200 - 230 grains in 45LC. What do I buy? Round nose, round nose flat point? Thanks for any help.....

Most people that shoot 45ACP lead cast or swaged bullets like the semi WADCUTTER style because they cut a sharper edged hole in targets and are easy to score Also seem to shoot smaller groups. BUT if you are shooting any type of revolver that needs to be able to reload the cylinder quickly than a round nose may be more to your liking. . One thing to be aware of is. Cast bullets need to be Bore size or slightly larger .001-.002 inch. Many bullets for 45ACP will be .450 or .451 and if they are hard cast alloy they will leave lead streaks in revolver barrels. Most heavy bullets meant for revolvers will be .452-.454 and not leave lead streaks in barrel. A good fit of bullet to bore size in more important then how hard the bullet is in both group size and lead streaking in the barrel. 0 -
Thanks Shooter..would be for 45 long colt. Looks like the set came with two seater plugs - one with a cup and one with a flat bottom. 0 -
The seater plugs are designed to fit a roundnose flattip (RNFP) or a semi-wadcutter (SWC). The former fits the curved stem and the latter fits the flat.
Cowboy shooters tend to use very light bullets and small charges to minimize recoil. Outside of competition, more normal choices rule. Look for RNFP bullets in the 250 to 255-grain area. Three great loads for those bullets are 6.5 RedDot, 7.0 W231 or 8.0 Unique. They are all pleasant to shoot and achieve velocities nearly equal to the original factory loads that proved deadly to any two- or four-legged animal encountered.
Set up the dies are per the instructions and you'll be fine.0 -
