Powder for 22 hornet

Lil'gun: Around 13 gr. with a 45 gr. bullet. The velocity and group size improved dramatically when I switched to Lil'gun in the Hornet. That powder seems to act a little funny in a bottle-necked case though. Be careful with using it in the .218 & .219. The same 13 gr./45 gr. load in the Bee case gave almost 3100 fps! That's way too fast for a Bee--I quit using it there. I don't have a .219.

I too found Lil'Gun to be ideal in the Hornet and it really helped when using it in the K-Hornet.

LilGun is THE powder for the Hornet, K-Hornet and Bee. I've loaded and written about all three, although the K-Hornet was gone before LilGun came out. It is too fast for normal loads in the Zipper, though.

The recipe for the Hornet is as follows:

Your choice of WW or RP brass, partially sized 3/4 of the neck.

Rem 6 1/2 or CCI small pistol primers.

    13.0 LilGun

Any Hornet bullet from 30 to 45 grains. The Barnes 30 is awesome on small critters, the 40 VMax, Blitz or Ballistic Tip on mid-size and 45-grain Hornet bullets for any and all critters up to coyote. Seat to feed from the magazine. Rugers may require a blunter bullet due to their short magazines. The Sierra is good in 40 or 45-gr weights.

Use the Lee Factory Crimp Die to firmly lock the bullet in place. This is essential for proper ignition.

That load, followed exactly, is accurate and fast in almost all Hornet rifles. In case your particular gun doesn't like it, change to Acc #1680 powder. You will get slightly lower velocity at slightly higher pressures, but it will probably work fine. I think W296/H110 is a tad fast and pressure-spiky in the Hornet, but some shooters like it. Case life will be short with that powder.

Lil'gun and AA1680 are my favorites. You can't go wrong with either.

We always used 4198. That was for both the Hornet and the Bee. Didn't have a K

Lil gun is good, but i find it a lil too fast & hot . I like my barrels to last. Been a keen shooter, use 1000's a year so from a good cal like the hornet ,i use 40 & 45gr s/p , with Vit 110 8-9gr does any job under 25kg to 150 yards 'pancaked'.[:)]
