looking for a little info on a 45-70 load
picked up some .458 565gr lead gas ck bullets, and cant find any start load data to begin with. hell my scale wont even go up to 565, so ill have to find one that will just to make sure they are what they say on the bag.
did find some data for 535gr in a very old load book.
anyone ever try some of this heavy stuff and have a powder and start load.
forget what powder i found for the 535 but i think it called for max of 65g and i don't think the 45-70 case will even hold that much

What gun do you intend to shoot them in? 0 -

That would be about the right amount of FFg but do you care enough to do it right?0 -

right didn't intend on using that powder so y remember something that has no factor in this question besides the powder amount for the 535 was AN EXAMPLE
guess i do that is why im asking if anyone loaded for this round[;)]
gun is a new england sp HB0 -
540 gr is a heavy as I have ever seen. Unless you are glutton for punishment I doubt that you will be able to push them fast enough to stabilize them. I'd feel way better if it was Ruger #1 or 3, or my Mexican small ring mauser or some other strong design. 0 -
guy just had 50 and thought i would make use of them 0 -
Ken Waters says in his book PET LOADS FROM HANDLOADER, page 488 that the following loads are safe in all 45-70 rifles using the Ohaus no. 45500R which casts out at 518 grains. 31 grains IMR 4198, 38 1/2 IMR 3031 and 48 grains H-4831 with a mag primer. I suspect that you have the old Postell bullet. A very fine long range bullet, I wish I had one. You can reduce these charges accordingly for your heavier bullet. But, I believe recoil in your light weight rifle will determine that decision for you. I have the Lee 500 grain mould that casts a 520 grain bullet. My T.C.R. likes 13 grains of unique behind it and it doesn't dislodge my shoulder. When loading such small charges, I always shine a flash light into the cases in the loading block to check against double charging. Love my 45-70's[:D]Ed 0 -

Yes, it can, but it doesn't have to. Try 16gr of trailboss with a 300gr LRN, the recoil is so low that my 10 year old daughter can shoot it0
