It sounds like you are describing a Steyr SSG. Damn good rifle and can get real pricey. But I dont know that they ever made a 10 round magazine for it, in which case than I would say its a Steyr scout tactical elite.

I like the SBS system, its a 3 stage safety that allows you to lock the bolt in a closed postion and is still made. I believe they guarantee accuracy at 1 moa, but if I do my job I can get mine to cut holes.

The SSG is the current rifle and what I am trying to ascertain is why they dropped the earlier version.

    Was there a defect?
    A minor problem?
    Or, just not commercially successful.

Most accurate rifle out of the box I've ever shot. It wasn't really dropped, just more bells and whistles added.

They continue to improve on the 1969 design.

Here is a running auction of one.

I have personally had the pleasure of shooting one with a Leupold MK4 ERT, and then a NightForce NXS 5.5-22x56.

quote:Accuracy at one MOA is unimpressive IMO and the then new bolt offered some interesting innovation with added strength but the fact it was short lived tells me it may not have worked out as well as the Austrians thought but then that us supposition.

It couldn't be further from the truth than that. As you can see, there are still NIB specimens floating in from Austria. As far as accuracy goes, so what the factory claims MOA or better. Steyr rifles from Austria, are like the SAKO, and Tikka rifles from Finland They always shoot better than they claim. The one I shot, with Black Hills match ammo, would shoot between 3/8, and 1/2 MOA. It would do the same with Winchester Ballistic Silvertips too.

Try finding one, and look at the price...they are not cheap. They are like a hybrid, of the SSG, and Scout. They are a very nice rifle, but not quite like a TRG-22...but then again, it wasn't meant to be. It's purpose was to be more portable.

tsr near as I can guess the action is the only thing the rifle I refer to has in common with the one you posted.
The above link is from the 1999 review of the one I am talking about.

I received a picture and posted it below. I believe this is the Pro-Hunter version of the SBS with the 10 round magazine conversion kit added.

    Wulfmann,

Same difference. The Steyr SBS system has always been known to be tack drivers, no matter what model they are. Pro Hunter, Tactical Elite, Supreme. Part of it is the action, and nice trigger, part the Krieger HAMMER forged barrel. This is not the Criterion button rifled barrel. There is nothing dilusional about the name Steyr. Like SAKO, Rigby, Holland & Holland, and a few other's, it has stood for quality, and accuracy, for decades. Them Austrian's know how to make firearms. GLOCK is another fine example.

    Wulfmann,

I know one MOA doesn't sound all that exciting. But, you have to consider the criteria that it has to make that. It has to do that from cold to hot, wet to dry. From the same given point of impact, clean or dirty. Meaning shoot it in the summer, clean it and go out when it's cold with Match AMMO, not handloaded, and shoot within one inch of where it was hitting last summer. Not just hitting one inch(1.047"). That's heat soaked to cold soaked. And no ammo 'tailored' to it.

When you put the full spectrum of what the rifle has to put up with and still give MOA it's pretty impressive.

From what I've shot of Steyr tactical rifles I've been very impressed. With handloads, one friend whose rifle I've shot is almost benchrest good.

The problem was I did not originally know which model the guy was selling.
He said it was the tactical but without a picture I did not really know. Once I got a picture I knew it was the Pro-Hunter.

Those were sold on sale for $500.00 at the local gun store in the late 90's.

He was asking $900.00 and for the tactical that would have been a good buy but not the pro-hunter. Even with the 10 round mag kit the rifle was over priced.
I am sure the seller was ignorant of which model he had but the fact he has had it for sale on a local forum BST for a few months suggests it is over priced as well.

Thanks for all the input. I was hoping it was a bargain tactical but alas, the dream has ended and I am awake!!
