Fill Holes in SS

How do I fill a hole in a stainless steel receiver so it looks halfway decent. Decorative screw will not work because it is not a full hole, it is just a deep dimple that I started before I realized it was not in a good place. This was done on a 1911 slide.

    Can you drill & tap through the dimple, then screw in a stainless screw to fill, remove the head & finish flat with the surface of the slide?

    No. I am putting a hole just in front of the extraction port that is supposed to hit exactly on the thick part of the barrel collar, but I missed and hit the trough. Anyone looking at the underside of a 1911 slide will know what I mean.

    The problem is that there is not enough material to hold a screw, even if I go completely through which is why I cannot finish the whole. I got the weaver mounts on nicely and they look great, but there is an extra hole (dimple) that doesn't look so nice.

    I like your idea though...

    What do you guys think about bondo with a nice color blend?

    weld it up and then surface grind it down Unlike steel that you have to blue and hard to get different alloys to match how they blue a good welder with stainless rod should be no problem.

    editremember old adage measure twice cut once. An Aimpoint micro will work with one mount only cost around $500.00 or you can invest in a good welding machine I think you are going to have many uses for one[}:)][;)][:0] BONDO and pistols do not mix. [:(!][V][xx(]

    With a 48tpi screw, you need what about .022 of a inch to get a full thread?? You should have more than that in thickness there. tap it and plug it with a locking compound on the two threads. Then file it flush.

    There is the secondary problem of the bases not being far enough apart to allow clearance for an Ultradot. They specified 1.75" and I am about 1/16 too close.

    Leave the divot as a reminder to measure more carefully.

    There is more chance of screwing it up by trying to patch it than there is the aggravation of looking at it.

    You could try epoxy resins. There are colors that may match up...

    With a picture you may get other ideas on ingravings or possible alternatives.
