The model 1907 sling is correct for your shotgun. The 1907 is a leather sling with brass frogs on the pre-WWII models and steel frogs on the WWII and more recent ones. This sling was replaced with the web sling. The model 1907 is pictured in a photo of a model 97 from a WWII technical manual and photo from WWII that I found.

    Herschel,

Thanks for the information. I looked on the auction side and saw a couple of original ones in the 70 - 100 dollar price range.

I think I'll hit a gun show in Lakeland Florida next month and try to acquire first.

Original slings are available as are many types of repros and knockoffs.
I suggest that a WWI era sling would be most correct. Many will still have legible date stamps. The keepers on the military slings were sewn and frogs should be brass. Since the guns were used through WWII and Korea a leather sling with steel frogs or even a web sling would have been used on the 1897 Trench Gun.

Will the standard issue sling for the M1903 rifle work? The trench guns had the sling swivel way forward..near the muzzle..will the old (or repro) leather slings run out of adjustment? Just ask'n (I have a trench, and would like to have a sling, also). Thanks, Joe

Joe, I saw what appears to be a model 1907 (leather) sling in a couple of photos in some of my reference material. The model 1907 is what was used on the model 1903 and M1 rifles until sometime in WWII when they began using the web slings. It is my opinion that the 1907 will work on the Trench guns but can't say for sure.
