Twist in Savage .243

    kc5gxc,

Seems to me Savage did a short run of Model 10/12's something like that that had that twist to stabilize the 115/117 VLD type bullets. A 1-9.25 will stabilize the 105 bullets but not by a whole bunch. I understand they did this with both the .243 and .223 (1-7" or 1-9/9.25" twist.

    Edit:

There is easily also the chance you got an aftermarket or even "custom" barrel from Savage. They quoted me a price of maybe $100 over MSRP for doing a 7mm-08 that way.

    Thanks for the info, Sandwarrior.
Looks like a plain ol Savage to me. Thin sporter barrel and blued. Plastic stock...nothing special in any way. I was thinking it may have been a package rifle. Had cheap scope on it when I got it. It shoots good. I am happy with it and aim to deal with Bambi soon....ha ha.
    Thanks, Pete

    Pete,

Good luck with this rifle. It's amazed me for a while now as to why Savage is producing the tight accuracy rifles they are. Heavy or standard barrel.
The 7mm-08 Stevens 200 I got to build a project on, actually shoots a smidge tighter than the 7mm-08 heavy barrel on a Choate I built it into. I'm sure I could take it in to my gunsmith and he could work some wonders on it. But it amazes me when a light barreled rifle shooting 140 gr. bullets shoots a .6" and the "custom" I had done shoots a .750. I always say it could be me, but my .223 and .308 both shoot .5 or better.

Hey Sandwarrior......great shooting ! What power setting on your scope do you use to shoot groups like that ?
I got a 3 x 9 but probably need more to get picky ! Of course...then I got to be able to quit rattling around.........haw haw......

The Savage/Stevens 7mm-08 has a 4-16x50 Burris Black Diamond, But I believe I had the Zeiss 6.5-20x50 on it when I shot the groups with it when it was the original barrel. The .308 is wearing an IOR Valdada 10x56(10X) and the MP-8 reticle. The .223 is wearing a Tasco World Class (older ones made in Japan) 4-16. All the groups were shot at the highest powers.

I've probably trained more people how to shoot really tight groups than seems reasonable. It just shoots great groups with most any good ammo. Get people situated right on the bench and even beginners start getting sub MOA groups. Once they can figure out some of what I'm telling them I've had people who've never shot a rifle, get behind that .223 and put together a .4-.5 group. And it just went up over a 2700 round count.

Thanks for the information on the scopes. I need more power.
I found the twist rate of my Savage is 1 in 9.25"...right where is is supposed to be. I had to tighten the brush on the rod...it was turning loose and causing the problem. Used pliers this time...ha ha.
    Learning every day.........thanks Sandwarrior !!!!!!!
