Unique in the 45/70
Would like to make up some loads using a 430gr cast bullet and Unique for my Marlin 45/70 Guide Gun. 1300 to 1400 fps would be great if possiable with safe pressures.

And the question is ? Lyman makes a very good loading manual just for this sort of thing. 0 -
I used 16.0grs. of Unique with a 405gr.LSWC in a Sharps. Very accurate. Also shot 20.0grs. of 2400 with a 405gr.JSP.
Used kleenex filler in both loads.0 -
My older Lyman book says 16.5 gr. max Unique 405 gr (457193) 1260 fps; 16.0 max Unique 482 gr (457406) 1165 fps. Rem 9 1/2 primer in Win Western cases. Both out of a 22 in. bbl Marlin 1895. 3031, 2400, 4198 4227 would be good choices. 0 -
I used Unique in the 45-70 with good results for many years. However, since it takes up very little space in the cartridge case you must be very careful not to put in a double charge.

I am sure Unique is a good powder, but not my choice. I use 34 grains of IMR 4198, behind a hardcast 405 for my rifles, of which they are both repro's made by Miroku...one is a 1886 takedown, and the other is a 1885 BPCR. I also use it in an original 1886.
Best
EDIT 1:
This particular load fills the case to just over half way, so there is not a chance of a double charge. It delivers velocities near what the original blackpowder factory loads were listed at, and out of rifles with rifling designed for lead, it is extremely accurate. A friend put some thru a Marlin 1895 Cowboy model, with a 3-9x40 Nikon scope, and they were shooting clover leafs at 100 yards. In the 1885 BPCR rifle, I have no problem with gallon milk jugs out at 300 yards, and they are quite common at 400 yards. I got started with this powder in this load range from a gentleman on here that goes by Bert H. That fellow knows what he is doing with those old Winchester's!0 -
I'LL SUGGEST 'TRAIL BOSS', FILLS THE CASE AND YOU CAN'T OVERLOAD 0 -
I was wanting to duplicant The Remington 405gr factory load with Lyman 457193 . Mine come from the mold at 430gr. 0 -
I use 13 grains of unique behind a 410 grain Lee bullet using wheel weights in my contender carbine. When using light loads, I always shine a flash light into the charged case to positively make sure that none are double charged. Eddie 0 -
This past year I took a small doe at 85 yards using the Rem 405 gr load and she drop were she stood. I have t he Lyman mold and a lee 405gr HP. It just seems like a good ideal to try some loads that duplicated the Rem load. I have used AA 3100 with good results but was looking for a powder that would give more shot per pound. I already have a couple of pounds of Unique , how about the old Win 680 which is AA1680 now. I have a couple of pounds of it as well? 0
