Depends upon the model gun.

Rem-oil. 0 -
Some triggers I clean and lube using lighter fluid. (IE Jewel) and some others, military triggers I use break free, usually applied with double tipped cotton swabs. 0 -
Don't put oil on the OUTSIDE of the trigger.
To the extent that you're going to oil the trigger, you want a TEENSY drop of oil at the pivot point(s) of the trigger mechanism.
Too much will just drip off and potentially attract dirt.
Which oil do you use? Pretty much any of them will work.
I like CLP, but you can use Rem-oil, Hoppe's, Militec, Royal Purple, or a zillion other products, so long as they're meant for gun use. If you want "cheap" some individuals swear by Mobil-1 synthetic motor oil as an excellent lubricant that is resistant to wear and high temperature.
Just don't use WD-40. . .that is NOT intended to lubricate gun parts.0 -
Careful not to oil the trigger in very cold weather. It can freeze and not break for your shot. 0 -
Cold weather; same goes for oil on the bolt of a bolt gun. My friend was deer hunting in S Dakota a few years back, a bit too much oil on the bolt froze it up solid. He had to put it in front of the pickup vent with the heater on to unload it when they went home. 0 -
