Old model 1894 Winchester 30WCF
Took the old boy( made in Nov.of 1899 ) to the range today and fired 150gr and 170gr Rem. but was surprised to see that the 150gr was about 10 inches high and the 170gr are about 8 inches high at 100 yds.I have the rear sight set all the way to the bottom and have the top of the front sight deep in the rear sight on shooting. The gun likes the 170gr better and groups 3 shots in a 3 inch triangle at 100 yards with open sights.Anybody have ideas what to do to get the bullets down so i dont have to hold under so much without changing the sights,i want to leave them original? Anybody have a good handload i could try ?

I personally like 33 gr H335 with the 150 gr and 30.5 H335 with the 170 gr. You can always bac of o couple of grains to vary where the will strike and for accuracy purposes. 0 -
The rifling twist rate was designed for the 170-grain bullet.
Are you 100% sure that the front sight is original?
Try a starting load of 28-grains of IMR 3031 under a 170-grain bullet. If necessary bump the powder charge in small increments to a maximum of 29.5 grains.0 -

A friend of mine has a rifle which does the same thing. What he learned from his father was that the rifle had been carried for many many years in a scabbard on the side of a saddle, constant pulling in and out wore the sight down. This could easily be the case for your rifle, based on its vintage. 0
