Good Morning. While I don't have a listing for the name A. BURWELL JR. among the over 850 names I have listed, I am almost sure the gun is a "Trade Brand Name" shotgun. A "Trade Brand Name" shotgun is one that was made by a major maker (and before 1940) for and was sold by a wholesaler or retailer who chose the name to go on the gun. From your basic description, I would say that the gun was made by the Crescent Fire Arms Company of Norwich,CT (1892 to 1931). Does the hinge pin have a circular tab about 3/4 of an inch in diameter that lifts up to unscrew the hinge pin (or did)? Now parts are going to be very difficult to find for a shotgun that is well over eighty years old. But don't give up hope. A replacement pin can be made by any competent gunsmith or machinist. I've done it several times. Now a favor from you please? Would you please confirm the name on the gun exactly as it is marked and any other markings that you can find. As I said, I don't have a listing for this name and would like to add it to the listings. Also, does the gun have a serial number and is it located on the lower tang just behind the trigger guard. A good photo would be appreciated. Thanks

Thank you for the info!!! The actual Imprint reads
    Long Range
    A. Burwell JR
    Charlotte, NC
and that's how it looks on the gun. I tried to get a pic of it but the patina hides it on close in shots so I can't really get close enough for it to show. it also has the serial number 753 on the tang right behind the trigger guard. I'm new to the forums so I can't figure out how to post images on here but it u give me ur email and I'll send em' right along. If u need any other angles feel free to reply and I'll send u all u want. Thank you soooo much for replying. I've been all over the net looking for info on this gun and you're the first to shed light on it!! I'm from right down the road from Charlotte so I thought it was cool that the gun had that on it.
    Thank you again!!!!!!
    sincerely,

Glad to be of help and to find another name to add to my listings. You can contact me at
Nedfall@comcast.net for any photos. Photos of left side, bottom of the gun including the trigger guard would be appreciated. Also look on the bottom of the barrel under the forearm for any proof marks. American made guns will not have any, Belgian made guns will have the letters "ELG" in an oval and English made guns will have crossed scepters or halberds (spear/battle axe) with a crown over that. I strongly suspect that the gun is American made and was made by Crescent Fire Arms Company of Norwich, CT (1892 to 1931) the biggest maker ever of such guns. I have listings of over 400 names that were used by Crescent and find at least one new (?) unknown name a month. It has been said that Crescent would make as few as twelve guns with some selected name as long as the buyer paid for the die needed to stamp the name on the gun. Not of of these names were recorded. More later.

    Dwildside68,

You could try rubbing some white chalk, or a crayon, in the writing on your gun, so that you can photograph those markings.
