Yes it can be done. But it's going to take a bunch of parts.
Is your Savage pre or post 2006? The difference is the older ones are 4.27" between the front two screws (that hold the action in the stock) and the newer ones are 4.41" between those screws.
If you do not already have a stock made for bottom metal you may need to get one. I'm not thinking you can just inlet further and get one to fit. That pertains to synthetic stocks. You can open up wood/laminate. In which case you may want to just get the kind of stock you want. Next there are a couple more options. You can go with the standard 3 round mag that Savage makes or you can go a ten rounder that holds AI mags (Accuracy International, very good quality). Badger and CDI Precision make bottom metal for those as well as some other companies. The best that I've found so far, through experience and friends experience, is CDI Precision. Jeff gets it done quickly and correctly. And if you have the DBM stock already it's $300 for the bottom metal and (1) ten round magazine. Badger is good too, but last time I priced them out they were more.

Why would you want to do this? It will cost a fair amount of money and time to gain what? 0 -

I was wondering about the same thing. I have a 111F in .300WM with blind mag and was considering converting to DBM but even that is hard to justify the cost vs. gain.0 -

Either shoot ten rounds and have spare loaded mags.
Shoot 3 rounds in a mag and have spare mags.
The truth is I see a bunch of advantages if you are looking at this tactically. As far as a sporting rifle, I can see remaining with the system you purchased.

Since we're now on the subject of tactical advantage, check out this guy shooting a .308 with external magazine of 5+1. He has to fire 12 rounds under 56 seconds.

I'm thinking he could've had a little more target time with two ten round mags. But good shooting. (My sound doesn't work on my new computer so I didn't hear anything he said).
My point with mags is you don't have to come off the rifle to reload. With a good detachable mag system you necessarily have to either. Quicker and more accurate in that type of shooting.0 -

There are also guys out there that go for single shots, esp. those long range hunters.
ADDED in response to sandwarrior.
