I want to buy an sks but there are so many choices. Chinese, norinco, russian, yugo, albanian, etc. I know the chinese/norinco's as well as the albanian models have chrome lined bores. Does a chrome lined bore make it a better gun? Ar15's have them as do ak's. What about parts? is it easier to find them for some models but not others?
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks, Larry

My opinion of the SKS is that I would be satisfied with either the Russian or the Norinco. Further, I would try to get the carbine version of the gun. Norinco turned out some nice machined versions years ago.

As far as a project, it depends on what you want to do with it. Depending on your gunsmithing skills, working over the trigger assembly could be difficult. There are also a lot of very good bolt-on parts available to turn the gun into an excellent ranch rifle, which I think is a very good, low cost alternative to something like the Mini-14 or Mini-30 (opt for the fixed 5-rnd magazine).

Don't know what kind of project you want to do,,but I would leave the Russians as is,,,for collectable reasons and get a Norinco and start with it. I have a few and like them alot.[:)] They are starting to bring more money than they used to, especially the clean matching ones...I would not mess with the Yugos,,just doesn't do it for me...kind of rough, ect..imo,,of course.

The best quality rifle is the Russian. Plus, these were actually made for the military, unlike the Norinco which were made for export.

The Yugo is substantially heavier than the others, close to the M1 rifle in weight. Plus, the Yugo has the ugly grenade launcher & grenade sights, but some folks look at their removal as part of the fun of a project.

After market parts are pretty much designed for the Norinco; fitting will likely be required for any other make.

The Russian, Yugo, & Albanian are C&R. Altering them will take them out of C&R status. This may or may not matter to you.

I've always thought that the Russian SKS were the best in over all quality. Lots of folks like the ChiCom rifles and while I have one laying around here somewhere, I was never that impressed with it. The Yugo SKS carbines are an interesting variation and depending on the specific model, can be found either with or without the built in grenade launcher. Quality is good and these were priced very reasonably for a long time. With some careful shopping you should be able to find a nice example of all three SKS carbines for under $1000.

threaded barrel ,milled trigger group is always a good place to start on the sks, any model or make.

Seems a shame to modify the C&R guns (especially a Russian) for some project.

I'd go with a Chinese one for that.

As mentioned, most of the aftermarket parts fit there the best.

thinking of getting one as a project. Any opinions as to which is the best made Russian, Norinco, Yogo?

    Thanks

djh860.......I started collecting the SKS years ago and have all three that you mention. As has been said, if you go Russian leave it stock as it will do nothing but appreciate in value. I find the Yugo's heavy and while good shooters, the grenade stuff up front detracts. So that leads to the Chinese and they vary quite a bit in quality. The one I prefer is the only SKS made to take AK mags, the SKS short barrel "Sporter" model. They are a bit rare, but give you the advantage of the SKS frame with the AK mag abiility. Anyway, good luck with your choice and your project![^]
